The 2012/13 academic year has been a true representation of the global nature of the private equity industry and our research and student work. Multinational teams and academic researchers, investigating private equity topics in several regions and countries, presented their winning papers at the 2012 Coller Prize award evening. In November, the Coller Institute held its first event abroad, hosting a very well received evening discussion with J. Christopher Flowers in Dubai about the global outlook for financial services in the PE context. A working paper on the drivers of liquidity in the private equity secondaries market by Professors Eli Talmor and Florin Vasvari, both of the Coller Institute at London Business School, was presented in October. In the same month Giorgia Palladini, an outstanding Post-Doc, arrived to support the Institute and its research efforts. Don't miss our flagship event in London this summer. The 6th Private Equity Findings Symposium under the headline "THE PRIVATE EQUITY MODEL: STILL FIT FOR PURPOSE?" will bring together about 300 academics and industry thought leaders, discussing current private equity industry concerns and research findings.

The 2011/12 academic year has been an exciting period for the Coller Institute of Private Equity, highlighted by some enlightening new research on private equity performance and an award for our Private Equity Findings publication. Our research agenda continues to be extremely active. Professor Chris Higson, London Business School has completed a ground breaking piece of research on the buyout industry’s performance which was presented at a Coller Institute event on 13 February. Co-authoredwith Dr Ruediger Stucke, Said Business School, the paper provides conclusive evidence on private equity performance and also highlights deficiencies with the data on which previous studies have been based.

We have been busy on developing new academic research examining Secondaries and replicating private equity portfolios. Some of the earliest findings were showcased at the Symposium in June, our flagship event. Our events calendar continues to flourish. Both “Venture Philanthropy and Social Ventures” and “Influence or Control: Hedge Fund Activism vs Private Equity” stimulated vibrant debates. The Symposium attracted an enthusiastic and vocal audience thanks to the quality of our keynote speakers and panellists. This year we interviewed many of the speakers and the videos are available on the website. The website has just passed its first anniversary; it is an invaluable tool for those wanting to identify and read research in this industry as well as for keeping in contact with events and news at the Coller Institute. We want it to be interactive so if you find a paper we don’t have, please tell us or upload it under the Research tab. May saw the publication of Private Equity Findings 4 which Professor Cornelli discusses in a video, and which together with the issue is available on the website.

The first half has been an extremely active period for the Coller Institute of Private Equity. The Coller Institute hosted the Coller Prize Award Evening on 30 November 2010 which included the inaugural PhD award, a category open to students from around the world. This category is an important addition to the Coller Prize, reflecting the ambition of the Institute to expand beyond London Business School and recognise the world’s best private equity research, just as it does with its publication, Private Equity Findings. Many leading institutions were represented in the PhD category including the University of Washington, Stockholm School of Economics, University of Hong Kong, Said Business School and Technische Universität München.
